Join ArtPoint for a presentation and overview by Curator Micah LeBrun and participating artists: Tim Dangaran, Wednesday Kirwan, Lindsey Kustusch, Josh Lawyer, Ryan Malley and Alphonzo Solorzano as they discuss their work.

Micah LeBrun is an artist and arts professional based out of San Francisco. He recently accepted the position of Curator at 111 Minna after many years of exhibiting his artwork with the gallery. Past experience includes working at Union Square’s Weinstein Gallery and he is currently acting as the Art Director for up-and-coming online art venture called Canver.

With his paintings Ryan Malley uses a decidedly realistic approach to spotlight subjects that are often overlooked in everyday life. These are the people and objects that comprise the world around us; he seeks to remind viewers that everything has a story to tell. Malley was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and received his BFA in 2003 from the Academy of Art University of San Francisco. He currently lives and works in San Francisco, California.

Visual artist Alphonzo Solorzano references ideas and themes from his creative explorations as a child. His earliest art-making experiences included comics and animation during endless drawing sessions with his two brothers. From these beginnings the use of graphic line work, typography, and the element of the narrative have emerged as major components of current work. He hopes to transport viewers to a place of childhood wonderment. Solorzano resides in San Francisco where he continues to experiment with a variety of media, combining illustration, fabrication, three dimensional elements and other technologies.

Wednesday Kirwan’s work plays on classic painting genres from turn of the century portraiture to pin-up art of the 50′s but with a whimsically dark twist. The female protagonists of her paintings display varying mixtures of comeliness and fierceness, interacting with the viewer, not as passive beauty to voyeur but as predator to prey. This current series is inspired by pop culture zombie films, a field rife for the exploration of the themes of beauty, decay, attraction and repulsion. Wednesday studied painting at the Kansas City Art Institute and works in San Francisco as a fine artist and illustrator.

People often comment that Tim Dangaran’s work looks like photography; although he uses photographs as reference material, he does not consider his work to be photorealism. As an artist he observes the unique details of a subject, deliberately omitting undesirable effects and imperfections while enhancing those that he finds important. His process begins when he takes photographs for reference but his observation and interpretation of the reference photograph as he creates the final art is what makes it unique. The transformation results in art that cannot be created by a camera.
